Happy Yuri’s Night. I am sporting my Yuri’s Night pin (top right) and my very special Russian Yuri Soyuz TMA-21 pin (in the center). That pin was for the 50th launch anniversary of the Soyuz TMA-21. The spacecraft was honored after Gagarin and launched from the same launch pad as Yuri almost 50 years earlier. On that flight US Astronaut Ron Garan flew to the ISS as part of Exp 27/28.
Bottom left is the Roscosmos pin. That little pin right below Yuri’s Night is a very special pin for the Russian Cosmonauts.
I am posing in front of a painting made by my dear friend Mark Johnson. 47 years ago he painted this image. During the Gemini 4 mission on June 3, 1965, Ed White became the first American to conduct a spacewalk. The spacewalk started at 3:45 p.m. EDT on the third orbit when White opened the hatch and used the hand-held manuevering oxygen-jet gun to push himself out of the capsule.
Mark, a 13 year old boy in Kansas was so inspired, he painted this painting. He did not have the color red available, so Ed’s EVA suit is missing the US flag. How awesome is that? #Russia #YurisNight #YN2013 #STEM #History

The person I got this from on ebay threw in a random Ed White button that wasn’t actually a part of the lot? Someone’s getting good feedback!
Awesome!

When I got home from my internship, I found the pins that Pam Melroy had promised to send me maybe waiting for me.
what? what? ARE YOU FRIENDS WITH PAM MELROY?!?!?! WHAT IS THISSSS!! :D
No, not friends, I met her by accident at a House Hearing in the Capitol, and then again a few days later at a NASA HQ event for Girl Scouts, when I happened, by remarkable coincidence, to be wearing two of her mission pins. When I mentioned that I didn’t own the third, she asked for my address so that she could send it to me.

So today, I was invited to have lunch at the National Geographic Society, and it was just completely superlative, and they gave me this!

FLEA MARKET HAUL.
I am really excited about my JOHN GLENN ACTION PACK, with the SENATOR JOHN GLENN ACTION FIGURE.
What kind of flea market has space pins?

I switched up my pins today for a more patriotic feel.
-
As you can see, I did indeed take ponsi-patootie’s advice, and wore my STS-107 pin to work today. It was appropriate, because I was writing letters to schoolchildren about space for part of the day today. (It was somewhat less appropriate when I was sorting the mail and imputing another staffer’s business cards into her e-mail address book.)

I forgot to show you guys, but at NASA HQ two weeks ago, I was SO excited to see that they had STS-107 lapel pins in the giveaway room, because I’ve never seen STS-107 pins anywhere else. (I wrote about how much I wanted one to wear while I was working at the observatory on the anniversary back in February, and I’d link to that if I didn’t have to get off the computer and go to bed soon.)
I think I might take a clue out of ponsi-patootie’s book and wear my pin on my jacket to work tomorrow.
